Von Ebert Brewing is releasing two Mexican style lagers that focus on balance and drinkability and subtle complexity just in time for Cinco de Mayo. The Dusk and Dawn pair are designed for both festive and everyday enjoyment (and they especially shine paired with bold Mexican cuisine). The beers’ debut also signals a new direction for the brewery as it continues to expand production and distribution and grow its lineup.
Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexico’s Independence Day — that’s September — but a sharper, stranger flashpoint: May 5, 1862, when an outnumbered Mexican force held the line against the French at the Battle of Puebla. It wasn’t the end of anything. It was a refusal. A moment where grit outweighed expectation and the underdog didn’t blink. Bradley Robinson, the Austin-based pitmaster behind the popular Chuds BBQ YouTube channel, managed to sum up the Portland barbecue scene fairly well after a whirlwind trip in July 2024.
“If you’re after that Franklin Barbecue brisket, ribs, sausage, that crafty Texas barbecue, go to Matt’s,” said Robinson. “Whereas Grasslands is a little more like LeRoy and Lewis, where they do brisket once a week, they’re doing a lot of specials and putting a lot of care into their sides.”
